Role Description

The St. Louis County Police Department’s Tactical Operations Unit (TOU) is a specialized team trained to handle high-risk situations, including hostage scenarios, armed and barricaded subjects, and the execution of search warrants. Officers in this unit are expected to maintain 24-hour readiness to respond to these critical incidents.


To qualify for a position in the Tactical Operations Unit, candidates must first serve as commissioned police officers within the department. They should demonstrate exceptional physical fitness, sound judgment, and the ability to perform under pressure. The selection process includes a comprehensive interview to assess traits such as maturity, patience, initiative, flexibility, dependability, enthusiasm, emotional stability, communication skills, and decision-making ability. Additionally, candidates must pass a job-related practical performance test evaluating coordination, stamina, strength, and confidence in handling tactical equipment.


Officers interested in joining the Tactical Operations Unit are encouraged to gain experience in various law enforcement roles within the department and pursue specialized training opportunities. This preparation enhances their skills and readiness for the challenges associated with tactical operations.

Education Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED and at least one year of full-time police experience, two years of active military service, or four years of National Guard/Reserve service
