Role Description
The Fire Chief is the ultimate "authority having jurisdiction" over a fire service area. They oversee all aspects and divisions of the fire department. They are responsible for the overall direction and mission of the organization. They are responsible for the yearly budget, implementing fire prevention regulations, and planning future needs. They must foster good relationships with community leaders, business owners, and residents. The Fire Chief should have a basic understanding of finances and a willingness to engage in local laws regarding the fire service.
Education Requirements
Usually, Supervisory experience with the rank of Captain or higher
Minimum - Bachelor's degree in business or fire-related field
Command-level leadership training such as Fire Officer Certification, Executive Fire Officer programs
Incident Command System Training - 100, 200, 300, 400
National Incident Management System Training - 700, 800
